OpenAI unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-4o, on Monday, aiming to enhance ChatGPT’s capabilities and user experience.
What Happened: Building upon the previous GPT-4 model, launched over a year ago, GPT-4o will be accessible to all users, marking a significant advancement in OpenAI’s technology.
According to OpenAI’s demonstration, GPT-4o transforms ChatGPT into a digital personal assistant capable of engaging in real-time spoken conversations. Additionally, it introduces “vision” capabilities, enabling ChatGPT to analyse and discuss images, screenshots, documents or charts uploaded by users.
Here’s how you can use ChatGPT’s new voice features for free right now on your phone:
- Download the ChatGPT mobile application from the Google Play Store or Apple Store.
- Start the app, sign in and begin a new chat.
- Tap on the headphone icon at the bottom right corner of the screen.
- Select a voice for the chatbot from the on-screen options.
- Converse with the bot in a natural speaking tone and wait for it to respond.
- Find a transcript of your conversation once you end the chat.
Note: The new model is being rolled out gradually to all users and may not be available on all phones.

The Next Step In AI Tech
Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technology officer, highlighted key features of the updated ChatGPT, including memory capabilities for learning from past interactions, as well as real-time translation.
“This is the first time that we are really making a huge step forward when it comes to the ease of use,” Murati remarked during the live demo, underscoring the natural and intuitive interaction enabled by the new model.
The release of GPT-4o shines a light on OpenAI’s efforts to maintain a leading position in the increasingly competitive AI domain, as other tech giants like Google and Meta continue to develop powerful language models for various applications.
Giving The Competition A Run For Their Money
Notably, OpenAI’s announcement precedes Google’s annual I/O developer conference, where updates to its Gemini AI model are anticipated. Similarly, Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference may feature new AI integration strategies.
The GPT-4o launch also holds significance for Microsoft, which has heavily invested in OpenAI to integrate its AI technology into Microsoft products.
During a demonstration, OpenAI executives showcased ChatGPT’s capabilities, including real-time problem-solving assistance, storytelling, coding advice, and emotion detection. The model exhibited human-like conversational skills across multiple languages, with support for over 50 languages.
A Sci-Fi Future?
CEO Sam Altman expressed enthusiasm for the new voice and video modes, describing them as reminiscent of AI depicted in movies. OpenAI plans to introduce a ChatGPT desktop app and offer GPT-4o to developers interested in building custom chatbots.
The rollout of GPT-4o features will occur gradually in the coming months, with free users granted limited interactions before reverting to the older model. This update is poised to expand ChatGPT’s user base and solidify its position in the AI landscape, particularly as AI integration becomes more prevalent in consumer products offered by tech giants like Google and Meta.
